Group 1 Direct Instruction

Group 1 started out our time in fieldwork by teaching about Earth Cycles and Patterns in the Sky.

They did  fantastic job, especially for being the first group to teach! They started their lesson off by talking to the students about what they see when they look at the sky during the day versus at night. They also asked about the difference in the sky in summer versus winter. These questions got the students thinking and they were all eager to add their input into the conversation. This led into the lesson which talked about rotation and revolution, phases of the moon, eclipses and constellations.

During their powerpoint, they added "Lets See What You Know Slides" to check the students for understanding. When a question was asked a student would answer and then they would tell the students to put a thumbs up if they agreed with the answer and a thumbs down if they disagreed. I love this idea because it gives a quick visual of which students understand and which students don't.
Kristen also showed the students hand movements for rotation and revolution, which definitely helped the students remember the difference!

For their guided practice, the students were put into groups and given strips of paper with sentences on them. They were to fill in the blank on their strip and then the entire class went over each answer. This is great activity because you can use it for any subject, and it gives the students an opportunity to work together. The students also loved it!

To end the lesson, the students were given a worksheet to work on independently. Following this, the class talked about what they learned today.

Group 1 gave a great example of how we should all be teaching a direct instruction lesson. I can't wait to see what they teach for their inquiry lesson!
