We have reached the last group of our fieldwork experience, Group 4!
Group 4 was given the task of teaching about Space Technology. In order to do so, they set a few classroom rules to control the class.
- When a teacher says "Hands on top, everybody stop" the students are to put their hands on their heads and look to the front of the classroom. This was great because the students didn't have to respond with anything which helped keep the volume down.
- They played a student vs. teachers game. When the students followed the classroom rules and are paying attention, they received a point, but when the rules were broken, the teachers earned a point. They added an extra touch by telling the students they would win a prize if they won (they did win!).
To introduce Space Technology, they showed examples of technology evolving. I like how the teachers did this because kids who are in elementary school now are used to the modern cell phones and computers. By showing examples of how we got to these devices, they are really able to see how much technology has changed.
Throughout the powerpoint, there were "Stop and Ponder" slides where they checked for understanding. Once a student answered, they used the thumbs up/thumbs down method to check for understanding from the other students. In between slides there was time for the students to fill in their note sheet. This was a good thing because they were having trouble with it, so the teachers went around to help them.
Jeopardy was planned for guided practice and the students loved it! It was an online version so it incorporated technology which was perfect because that was their topic. Afterwards, they had the students write a letter to NASA about their favorite piece of technology that they learned during the lesson. A checklist of what to include was also handed out, which helped the students.
To end the lesson, the students were instructed to write one fact they learned and then placed it on the green rocket ship. They wrote a question and placed it on the yellow rocket ship and then wrote one thing they absolutely didn't know and placed it on the red rocket ship.
I give credit to group 4 because Space technology seems to be the hardest topic to teach out of all of them and they did a great job!
